Columbus Summer Camp Guide 2016

Summer is Here!

Nothing is more painful then the planning that goes into summer break. If you are anything like me, the anxiety that begins to form is overwhelming. I rave for the great weather, and long days, but this Momma here still works a 9-5. Summer is a break for my oldest, but for me life just continues to go as planned (crosses fingers for a vacation here and there).

I am a huge advocate for kids being kids, but also with the understanding that education is important. Research has told us that long summer breaks can be detrimental to children who have a hard time retaining their educational skills learned all school year. This is why I advocate for placing children in an environment that offers a great balance of being safe, fun, and educational.

One of the biggest barriers to summer camp is the cost. Don't worry! Listed below are also camps that provide scholarships, financial aid, income based, etc. Most programming won't list they have funds available to assist, but if you call and talk through your circumstances they will share how they can accommodate or tell you about programs that will.

Listed below are tons of summer camp ideas to help make your summer a little bit more of a breeze, and a exciting experience for both you and your young one.

Side Note: My eldest daughter has not attended all of these camps. Please be open to the experience with the idea that not all programs are for you or your child. Please talk to other parents in your child's class or that you know, go on a tour, or google reviews to get a good idea on the program of choice.

Firefly Play Cafe

Firefly Play Cafe

I decided on this open play space for Karter's 2nd birthday. Can I just gloat in my glory for a moment. This indoor play cafe by far is one of the best play spaces in Columbus, Ohio. Firefly is the first play space to open in Central Ohio and has been operating for over 6 years. During the week they operate from 9-5p, with pricing ranging from $5-$8 depending on the age of the child. Children under 12 months are free.  This indoor play gym has everything! Library nook, play gym, pretend play areas, and even a inflatable bounce house!  The floor plan is open, clean, with lots of natural lighting, and space for kids to run wild. The tea, and coffee options are delicious and local. They also offer classes for the kiddos and parents, details listed on the website. Andrea was our party host, and she did a fabulous job with making the birthday party successful. We rented the party space for $245, Firefly provided us with 2 hours of free play, the entire space to ourselves, party host, and free beverages. I was able to bring in any food, and decorations items I wanted. And did I mention I was able to bring in adult (alcohol) beverages for the party guest. I mean this was just perfect. I can not say enough about the service, location, and amenities. Parents tend to think Columbus has nothing to offer, I am hear to tell you that there is some true gems amongst us. I give Firefly Play Cafe a child friendly review of 10 out of 10!

Piccadilly

Modern Play and Creative Cafe

I have finally found a play space centered between downtown Columbus and my home in Pickerington. This play cafe is tucked away in Bexley, Ohio, right next door to Bexley Public Library. This play space offers both free play, and a delicious cafe that offers an assortment of healthy yummy treats! For $10 you purchase an all day pass, and the best thing about this day pass is you have the convenience of leaving and coming back for free! Only able to do a quick 30 minutes? Get an express pass for $4. Kids 12+ and 6 months and younger are free! This creative cafe is directed towards crawlers to early imaginations. With a cool play gym, with plenty of puzzles, train tracks, play mats, and more, your child won't be disappointed. If you get hungry you can order from a menu of items low cost. I was able to pig out on a half avocado/grilled cheese sandwich with an half harvest salad for under 7 bucks!! This gem also offers scheduled play activities, host birthday parties, camps, and weekly child friendly events. Hours run daily until 530p, and extended hours offered on Thursday's. I give this a child friendly review of 10 out of 10! It's a perfect spot for parents to sit back, grab a cold beverage all while the little ones let go of some energy. I was able to connect with a few Bexley moms and chat! Karter and her cousin went straight for nap afterwards.
